Standard IRQ allocation
IRQ 0 System timer interrupt from TIMER-0. No user-definable options.
IRQ 1 Keyboard controller
IRQ 2 Cascade for IRQs 8-15. IRQ 9 cascade to IRQ 2 through a software redirect.
IRQ 3 Available. The standard IRQ for COM 2/COM 4.
IRQ 4 Available. IRQ 4 is the standard for COM 1/COM 3 - the serial mouse connection. Don't try to have the mouse share an IRQ.
IRQ 5 Available. This is the default IRQ for most sound cards. Network card and LPT 2 are often set to IRQ 5, IF a sound card is not used.
IRQ 6 Floppy Drive controller. No user-definable options.
IRQ 7 Primary parallel (printer) port - LPT 1. If a parallel port is not used, then IRQ 7 can be assigned to another device.
IRQ 8 Real Time Clock. No user-definable options.
IRQ 9 Cascades to IRQ 2.
IRQ 10 Available. If a sound card is using IRQ 5, then this IRQ can be used for a network card.
IRQ 11 Available. Often used for a SCSI controller.
IRQ 12 Available. Often used for the PS2 style mouse.
IRQ 13 Math Coprocessor. No user-definable optinos.
IRQ 14 Primary IDE (hard drive, CD ROM) controller. The 2 IDE devices on the same cable use the one IRQ.
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE channel. Available if the secondary channel is disabled.

Manual Restore XP
Manual steps to recover a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting
At the Press any key to boot from CD prompt, perform the following steps:
Press the [Spacebar].
The Windows Setup screen appears, and several files are loaded.
Press the [R] key.
If prompted, select the number corresponding to the Windows installation you want to log on to (usually C:\WINDOWS).
Press the [Enter] key.
Enter the Administrator password (if any) and press the [Enter] key.
The C:\WINDOWS prompt appears.
NOTE: If the system fails to boot, the following method of recovery is not possible.
To copy the restore point in the recovery console, perform the following steps:
Type cd \ and press the [Enter] key.
Type cd system~1\_resto~1 and press the [Enter] key.
NOTE: If a message Access Denied is displayed while attempting this fix, perform the following steps:
Type cd \ and press the [Enter] key.
Type cd windows\system32\config and press the [Enter] key.
Type ren system system.bak and press the [Enter] key.
Type exit and press the [Enter] key.
Restart the computer.
Start again from beginning at step 1.
Type dir and press the [Enter] key.
A list of restore points appear. Choose the restore point which is dated the day prior to the occurrence of the reported error.
Type cd rpx (where x represents the restore point you chose in the step above) and press [Enter].
Type cd snapshot and press the [Enter] key.
Type dir and press [Enter].
Type copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system and press [Enter].
Overwrite system? (Yes/No/All): appears.
Type Y and press the [Enter] key.
Type copy _registry_machine_software c:\windows\system32\config\software and press the [Enter] key.
Overwrite software? (Yes/No/All): appears.
Type Y and press the [Enter] key.
Type copy _registry_machine_sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam and press the [Enter] key.
Overwrite sam? (Yes/No/All): appears.
Type Y and press the [Enter] key.
Type copy _registry_machine_security c:\windows\system32\config\security and press the [Enter] key.
Overwrite security? (Yes/No/All): appears.
Type Y and press [Enter].
Type copy _registry_user_.default c:\windows\system32\config\default and press the [Enter] key.
Overwrite default? (Yes/No/All): appears.
Type Y and press the [Enter] key.
Type exit and press [Enter] to restart the computer and remove the Windows CD.
NOTE: If any error message is returned while in the recovery console, use an earlier restore point.

Repair install from XP:

Startup Repair from VISTA
1. Start the computer.

3. Press the [Down Arrow] key to select Repair Your Computer and press the [Enter] key.
The System Recovery Options window appears.
4. Select your language and click Next.
5. Log in as a user with administrative rights and click OK.
6. Click Startup Repair.
Restore Windows Vista to the factory backup.
To restore Windows Vista to the factory backup, perform the following steps:
1. Start the computer.
2. Tap the [F8] key on the keyboard during the startup process until you see the Windows Advanced Options menu on the screen.
3. Press the [Down Arrow] key to select Repair Your Computer and press the [Enter] key.
The System Recovery Options window appears.
4. Select your language and click Next.
5. Log in as a user with administrative rights and click OK.
6. Click Dell Factory Image Restore.
The Dell Factory Image Restore window appears.
7. Click Next.
8. Check Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition.
9. Click Next.
The factory software image is now written to your hard drive.
10. Click Finish to restart the computer.
NOTICE: Restoring Windows to the factory default configuration deletes all data on the C: drive. You must back up your data before performing this step or your data will be lost.
NOTE: If the Windows Advanced Options menu does not appear, restart the system and try again.
